The Product Categories module allows administrators to define and manage a list of categories used to classify inventory items. Each product category record consists of a unique code and an optional description, providing a structured way to group and organize items throughout the system.

Maintaining well-defined product categories supports inventory reporting, filtering, and item organization by ensuring that items can be consistently grouped by their category across stores and channels.

Purpose of Product Categories

Product Categories are used to:

• Classify and group inventory items into logical categories for reporting and filtering.
• Provide a standardized code and description for each category across the system.
• Support item management workflows by enabling category-based searches and exports.
• Ensure consistency when integrating with ERP or external systems that reference product category codes.

Creating or Editing a Product Category

To create a new product category or modify an existing one:

1. Navigate to Inventory → Product Categories.
2. Click the + button to create a new product category, or use the grid Actions to edit an existing entry.
3. Enter a unique Code to identify the product category. This value must be unique across all product categories.
4. Optionally enter a Description to provide a human-readable explanation of the category.
5. Click Save to persist the configuration, or Cancel to discard changes.

Available Fields

Code	A unique code identifying the product category.	Required. Must be unique across all product categories.
Description	A descriptive label for the product category.	Optional. If left empty, no description is stored.

Operational Considerations

• The Code field must be unique it cannot be shared with another product category. Changing a code after it has been assigned to items may cause data inconsistencies.
• The Description field is optional; if left blank, it will appear empty in the grid.
• Changes to a product category's Code or Description will be reflected wherever the category is referenced in inventory items and reports.
• Deleting a product category that is actively referenced by inventory items may cause data integrity issues - verify that no items reference the category before removing it.

Notes

• The product categories grid supports searching, column editing, and export/download actions.
• The grid displays Code and Description columns with sortable headers.
• The create/edit form uses a standard text input for Code and a multi-line text area for Description.
• Only Code is required - the form can be saved with an empty Description.
