General Settings¶
Core system configuration and operational settings.
General Settings control fundamental system behavior that affects all registers and users. These settings define how the system operates at the most basic level.
Navigation: Settings → General
System Information¶
Display Name¶
The name shown throughout the system:
- Appears in page headers and dashboards
- Shown in receipt headers (if configured)
- Identifies system in browser tabs
- Default: "Kensium Point-of-Sale"
To change: 1. Navigate to Settings → General 2. Find System Display Name 3. Enter desired name (e.g., "Acme Retail POS") 4. Save
System Timezone¶
Affects all date/time operations:
- Login timestamps
- Transaction dates
- Reports and reconciliation dates
- Scheduled jobs and backups
To configure: 1. Go to Settings → General 2. Find Timezone 3. Select your timezone from dropdown 4. Verify current time is correct 5. Save
Important: All registers should use the same timezone. Changing timezone affects historical data display.
Operational Settings¶
Server Configuration¶
Server URL
- Base URL for API and web access
- Used by all registers to connect
- Change only if migrating servers
Locale & Language¶
Default Language
- Interface language (English, Spanish, etc.)
- Menu and label language
- Report text language
Regional Format
- Date format (MM/DD/YYYY vs DD/MM/YYYY)
- Number format (decimal separator)
- Currency symbol
- Affects displays across system
Session Settings¶
Inactivity Timeout
- How long until automatic logout
- Range: 5 minutes to 4 hours
- Default: 30 minutes
- Affects all users and registers
Session Persistence
- Whether to remember login across browser restarts
- Controlled by organization's login system (SSO/Azure AD)
System Behavior¶
Transaction Processing¶
Allow Negative Sales
- Can transactions result in credit to customer?
- Used for refunds without original receipt
- Requires manager authorization (typically)
- Enable/Disable based on business policy
Minimum/Maximum Transaction Amount
- Limits on transaction size
- Prevents data entry errors
- Configurable per store if needed
Concurrent Transaction Limit
- How many sales can be "in progress" simultaneously
- Affects register memory usage
- Default: 10 concurrent sales
Display Settings¶
Register Display Refresh Rate
- How often register screens refresh
- Affects responsiveness vs. CPU usage
- Default: 100ms
- Decrease for more responsive, increase for less CPU
Timeout for Inactive Screens
- Seconds until screen returns to home
- Security feature (return to login if abandoned)
- Range: 1 to 60 minutes
Performance Settings¶
Caching¶
Enable Client-Side Cache
- Cache product data locally on register
- Improves performance, allows brief offline operation
- Default: Enabled
Cache Expiration
- How long before cached data refreshes
- Range: 5 minutes to 8 hours
- Default: 30 minutes
- Shorter = fresher data, longer = better performance
Cache Size Limit
- Maximum MB of data to cache per register
- Default: 100 MB
Network¶
Connection Timeout
- Seconds to wait for server response
- Default: 30 seconds
- Increase if network is slow/unreliable
Retry Failed Requests
- Number of retry attempts
- Default: 3 attempts
- Applies to network failures only
Connection Pooling
- Reuse connections between requests
- Improves performance
- Default: Enabled
Backup & Data Settings¶
Automatic Backup¶
Enable Automatic Backup
- System runs backups on schedule
- Backup frequency (hourly, daily, weekly)
- Default: Daily at 2:00 AM
Backup Retention
- How many backups to keep
- Older backups automatically deleted
- Default: 30 days worth of daily backups
Backup Storage Location
- Where to store backup files
- Local: On server
- Cloud: S3 or cloud storage
- Off-site: For disaster recovery
Data Retention¶
Transaction Archive Age
- After how many months to archive old transactions
- Archived transactions still accessible but not in active reports
- Default: 12 months
Log Retention
- How many days of system logs to keep
- Affects troubleshooting capability
- Default: 90 days
Notification Settings¶
Email Configuration¶
SMTP Server
- Email server address
- Required for sending receipts via email
- Example:

SMTP Port
- Port number (typically 587 or 465)
- 587 for TLS, 465 for SSL
From Address
- "From" email on sent messages
- Example:
noreply@store.com
Authentication
- Username and password for SMTP server
- For secure email sending

- Examples: Low inventory, drawer discrepancies, errors

- Default: 100 requests/second
API Token Expiration
- How long API tokens remain valid

- Default: 24 hours

- Requires System Admin permission
